Charles McAvoy  Scouting Report

More from Avalanche News

According to Last Word on Sports, Charlie McAvoy is an “excellent skater, with good speed and acceleration in both directions. He has very good agility, and edgework, which allows him to avoid forecheckers or to skate through traffic in the neutral zone to create offense.”

Part of McAvoy’s skating is that he pivots well, meaning he can transition quickly from defense-to-offence and vice-versa. This is very important for a defenseman, and it’s a type of skating skill that both Erik Johnson and Tyson Barrie display.

McAvoy’s strong skating allows him to cover a lot of ice. Additionally, his good balance makes him tough to knock off the puck. As Last Word on Sports points out, his balance also allows him to establish position in board battles and in clearing the front of the net.

Charles McAvoy is American born, a native of Long Island.  He played in the Gulls’ program but, like Johnson, he joined the US National Development Team Program. His training has built him for the “modern game,” as LWS says. That means he’s got a solid two-way game, strong skating and a style that keeps the puck close to his body.

What’s more, McAvoy displays a heavy shot that’s accurate. His stickwork lets him make good tape-to-tape passes. He’s also got one mean hit.

Charles McAvoy Potential Fit with the Colorado Avalanche

McAvoy would fit well with the Colorado Avalanche’s young talented team. He would provide speed, toughness and offense. The Avalanche like two-way players because they like the versatility that they provide.

Being able to play on both sides of the puck, as McAvoy can do, could help any team but most specifically the Colorado Avalanche. He would fit the type of players they have with his speed and mobility. McAvoy is tough, which is what the Avalanche are looking for. The fit is there with his talents and natural ability. I like what he could bring to the Colorado Avalanche.
