Jesse Winchester signs two year deal with Colorado Avalanche

It didn’t take the Colorado Avalanche long to make a signing on free agent day. Jesse Winchester, formerly of the Florida Panthers, has signed a 2-year deal worth $900K per season. Winchester played in 52 games with the Panthers last year, scoring 18 points. He’s a 30 year old center who stands at 6’1” and weighs 205 pounds.

Winchester is known as a defensive center who works hard and kills penalties. He will likely start the season on the Avs fourth line.

While not a big signing, the Avs are upgrading their depth. The day is still young and the Avs are expected to make more signings as the day progresses.

Thoughts: Everyone, myself included, complained about Marc-Andre Cliche as last season progressed. He was a guy who worked hard but looked lost as the moment got bigger and his role expanded. Jesse Winchester will likely replace Cliche on the fourth line. It’s not the big splash that fans were hoping for, but depth is important and the day isn’t close to being over.
