The Colorado Avalanche continued to add depth to their line-up today with the signings of defenseman Zach Redman (2-years, $1.5 million) and forward Ben Street (1 year, $650K). Both players are expected to start the season with the Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL.
Redman, 25, is an offensive defenseman with upside. At 6’2” and 205 pounds, he has the potential to be a very strong addition to the Avalanche defense if he can better utilize his size. He played in 10 games for the Winnipeg Jets last season and put up 3 points.
Street, 27, is a hard working forward who has proven to be a good scorer at the AHL level. He’s played in 19 career NHL games, contributing 2 points.
Thoughts: More depth, although a lot of people are high on Redmond competing for a roster spot out of training camp. With the additions of Redmond and Bruno Gervais, it seems like the Avs are posturing to move a guy like Ryan Wilson, who is making $2.25 million next season to likely be a healthy scratch unless injuries hit. And even then he might be a healthy scratch given the depth of the Avs defense right now. I think the Avs are pretty much done for the day unless they add more depth or offload a couple of contracts.
