A couple of minor moves on this busy day for the Colorado Avalanche as they signed defenseman Bruno Gervias to a one-year, two-way contract worth $650,000. They also lost forward Brad Malone to the Carolina Hurricanes, who signed a two-year $1.3 million dollar deal with the Hurricanes.
Gervais, 29, spent all last season in the AHL with the Adirondack Phantoms. In 59 games he scored 10 goals and had 26 points. He does have NHL experience, playing in 418 career games and putting up 87 points. Colorado Avalanche forward Maxime Talbot was the best man at his wedding. The two are long-time childhood friends. He is thought of as a depth defenseman for the Avalanche and will likely spend most of the season in the AHL with the Lake Erie Monsters.
Malone, 25, played in 32 games for the Avalanche last season, spending most of his time on the fourth line. He contributed five points and is known as a hard working forward who plays a psychical game.
Thoughts: Not much of note. Brad Malone is no big loss and Bruno Gervias isn’t a big gain. Gervais will help the Avs defensive depth and Malone will get a bigger chance to succeed in Carolina.
