The Colorado Avalanche needed to upgrade their defense, and instead of spending in the free agent market, they hit the trade market and acquired Brad Stuart from the San Jose Sharks for a 2016 2nd round pick and a 2017 6th round pick. Stuart, 34, won a Stanley Cup in 2008 with the Detroit Red Wings. He’s on the last year of a $3.6 million dollar contract.
Stuart is known as a psychical defensive defenseman who plays with an edge. He’s coming off a season that saw him put up 11 points in 61 games with the Sharks.
Stuart will likely be a top four defenseman with the Avalanche.
Thoughts: It’s clear that the Avs are going after veterans. Daniel Briere yesterday, Brad Stuart today. This is a team that expects to be in the playoffs and they want gritty playoff tested guys in their lineup. It’s also clear that the Avs are looking towards the future. Instead of signing a free agent defenseman to a long term deal, they go with a short term solution and give themselves cap space for next year. It’s already been a busy day for the Avs and there are still plenty of hours left.
