The Colorado Avalanche have won the Central Division as a result of the St. Louis Blues loss earlier today to the Detroit Red Wings. Both teams have 111 points, but the Avs own the tiebreaker with 47 regulation and overtime wins compared to St. Louis’ 43. The Avs also have one game remaining against the Anaheim Ducks later today, but the result of that game won’t affect the standings.
With the division victory, the Avalanche will play the Minnesota Wild, the top Wild Card team, in the first round of the playoffs.
A division title seemed out of the question two weeks ago, but the Blues faltered down the stretch, losing their last six games and going 3-7 in the final 10. Meanwhile, the Avs have gone 8-1-1 in their last 10 games, which allowed them to close the gap and eventually surpass the Blues for the division crown.
It’s been a remarkable turnaround for the team that finished dead last in the West last season and it’s not over yet.
