Still Jiggy With It; Avs Extend Giguere

Finally, some signing news from Avalanche Land! Sadly, it wasn’t Ryan O’Reilly.

According to the Associated Press and CBC, the club has signed 35 year old back up Jean Sebastian Giguere to a 1 year deal that will have him in an Avs uniform until the end of the 2013-14 season.

From the Desk of GM Greg Sherman:

“J.S. provided leadership, stability and a veteran presence to our team last season… He helped solidify our goaltending position and we are pleased to have J.S. under contract for the next two seasons.”

Great news for a team that really hasn’t had a stellar back up in some time. As we saw last season, Jiggy can still play if Varlamov ever falters. Speaking of Varly, with this move he keeps his Goalie Mentor, which is important when your team believes that flying in Kirk Mclean once every two weeks counts as a ‘goalie coach’.

$1.5 mil for a year is a pretty good number for a guy who set team best records last season with the lowest GAA and Save Percentage,  2.27 and .919 respectively since David Aebischer. If your memory is a little hazy, that was in 2003. I know, it feels much longer, doesn’t it?
