The AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, the Lake Erie Monsters, are in a playoff push that is greater than that of the Avalanche. Of course the Avs and their playoff race takes center stage because it is the NHL. Lake Erie though, is right in the middle of an epic playoff race in the Western Conference of the AHL.
Lake Erie currently sits in 9th position in the West with 11 games remaining on their schedule. The thing that overshadows the Monsters’ race is the fact that only two points separate six teams in the West. This means that two of those six teams will be left out of the playoffs.
Like their big brothers in the NHL, Lake Erie has played the most games in the Western Conference as of today. Only Abbotsford has played the same amount of games as the Monsters, 65. This means that the Monsters have fewer games to earn more points, which in turns makes every game extremely important.
Unlike their big brothers, most of their remaining games will be played in front of their fans at The Q (Quicken Loans Arena). The Avalanche have had to become road-warriors in their fight for the playoffs. Lake Erie, on the other hand, will have the support of their fans behind them in their fight down the stretch.
A quick line change has us looking at the Avalanche and shows that they are still in the top 8 in the West. There are still 5 teams within 2 points of each other as the fight for the final 2 spots continues. Tonight, the Avs must watch as the Sharks take on the Ducks and hope the Ducks take care of business. With 8 games remaining and an extremely successful East Coast swing, the Avalanche now control their fate the rest of the way. If all goes well, the Avs and Monsters will be enjoying some much welcome playoff hockey.
