The Avalanche made every second count in last night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres. In the first game of a back-to-back series along the east coast, the Avs found themselves in an old west like dual. The Avalanche and Sabres matched each other goal for goal in every period and ultimately found themselves in a shootout.
This tweet came at the end of the second period when the score was 3-3. After the Sabres scored the go-ahead goal, they started to play a little dump and chase and let the Avs stay close in the game. Finally with an extra attacker and only 1.7 ticks left in regulation, Jamie McGinn found the puck trickling ever so close to the goal line and stuffed it home to send the game into overtime.
The next mistake the Sabres made was to let the game go to a shootout. The Avalanche are deadlier than Doc Holliday in a shootout, and proved it once again last night. With a league best record of 9-1 in shootouts, if the Avs make the playoffs they can look back and be proud that their shootout record helped them make it into the postseason.
After last night’s last second heroics, the Avalanche are going to be hard-pressed to perform better tonight. Here they are in the final back-to-back of their season, in the middle of the playoff push, looking to pick up some much needed insurance points against a tough Devil team tonight. The perennial playoff team of New Jersey will not make things easy on the Avs though. The Devils are in a fight to improve their playoff position and will have the same desire to play tonight as the Avalanche do.
Colorado will be watching the out of town scoreboard closely once again tonight. With the Coyotes playing the Flames and the Sharks playing the Predators, all Avalanche fans will be keeping a close eye on those games. The best case for the Avs tonight is to win (obviously), have Phoenix win and have Nashville win. This will keep seventh place (PHX) and eighth place (COL) right where they are.
These final ten games are going to be a true test for Colorado, and if they find themselves in the playoffs it will be because they earned their spot. Right now there are absolutely zero guarantees on which teams will occupy the seventh and eighth spot in the West. The Avalanche have what it takes to make it into the playoffs and will need to show it tonight in New Jersey.
