Avalanche Occupy 8th All Alone…For Now

With the three-point win yesterday over the Edmonton Oilers in the shootout, the Colorado Avalanche catapult from 10th in the West to 8th.  The Avs played an extremely tough game at home yesterday against Edmonton and came away with another shootout win.  With that win the Avalanche occupy the final playoff spot in the West, but there is still a ton of hockey left to play.

Even with the Avalanche currently sitting pretty in the West, the Avs are at a disadvantage.  Colorado has played 70 games already, which is the most played in the Western Conference.  Every other team has two or three more games to play than that of the Avs.  This means that those teams have that many more opportunities to move ahead of the Avalanche.

The two teams slated to play tonight that could hinder the Avalanche’s current standing are Calgary and Los Angeles. If the Kings and Flames both win in overtime, there will once again be a three-way tie for the 8th place playoff spot in the West.   Avs fans are hoping the two teams ultimately lose because a win in regulation means they are tied with the Avs, and looking at their games played it means they would be ahead of the Avalanche.

Granted there is still a ton of hockey left to play, but this is the best time of the season to be a hockey fan.  The points race is heating up and teams usually play their best hockey down the stretch.  March Madness usually means a bracket of 64 NCAA basketball teams duking it out for a National Title.  Well in every hockey town across North America, March Madness is something totally different.  March Madness means playoff hockey is just around the corner and that means teams are hitting their stride and playing some awesome hockey.  Fans sit back and enjoy the Madness, as we have only 12 games left in the regular season and anything can still happen.
