Red Hot Avalanche Look for Fifth Win in a Row

Tonight the Columbus Blue Jackets come to Pepsi Center to face the red hot Colorado Avalanche. The Avs come into tonight’s game riding a 4 game winning streak in which they have outscored their competition 17-5.  The underlying story of tonight’s game is that this streak really picked up momentum with an Avalanche win in Columbus only six days ago.

New acquisition Jamie McGinn should be in uniform tonight and looks to make his presence felt on the ice early and often. McGinn hopes to have a debut like fellow Avalanche player Steve Downie had.  McGinn also hopes to lead the Avs with his playoff experience as Colorado eyes the playoffs.

The Avs defense, which has been in question throughout the season, seems to be playing a bit better. The turnovers in front of their net and in the neutral zone seem to be getting declining with each game. The physical play seems to be picking up with guys finishing their checks and thus creating odd man rushes for the Avs.

The Avalanche need to continue their outstanding breakout play with the likes of Stastny and Duchene on their line and Landeskog, O’Reilly and Downie on the second line, creating more and more odd man breaks.  Over the span of the 4 game winning streak, the Avalanche have capitalized on the odd man rushes that have been executed by the aforementioned players.  In order to stay hot, the Avs need to continue to utilize their speed and execute on the offensive rushes.

A lot of people are starting to take notice of the play exhibited by Colorado lately. Many teams, especially those right in front of Colorado, now have some unwanted pressure that has been applied to them. This is great for Colorado because now the Avs are forcing other teams to play well each and every night.  With tonight’s game, the avalanche hope to have the month of March come roaring in like a lion by posting yet another win, extending their current streak to 5 games.
