There is no better feeling as a minor league hockey player than being called up to the “Bigs.” Mark Olver though found a new euphoria last night in Edmonton that beats getting that all-important call. Olver became a major factor last night in the game that he was called up for.
The Avalanche had recently called up two guys (Olver, Desjardins) between the trip from Vancouver to Edmonton and sent one down (Barrie) and put another on IR (Galiardi). With those moves the Avs needed some guys to fill those spots. They just may have found one in Mark Olver.
Olver last night earned the third star of the game and contributed on two of the Avalanche’s three goals. Olver found the back of the net once and contributed on the beautiful Erik Johnson goal late in the first period.
With the first period fading away the Avalanche pounced on a golden scoring opportunity. Dumping the puck into the zone, Colorado forced Edmonton goalie, Devin Dubnyk, out of the net. The hustle of Ryan O’Reilly got the play going by picking off Dubnyk’s pass behind the net, catching Dubnyk out of his crease. O’Reilly threw the puck to the center of the net finding Olver. Olver then found an open Erik Johnson who had a clear shot to the net and got the Avalanche on the board first, with yet another late period goal.
The second period score-fest got started with Olver. On a semi-developed three on two, Olver flew up the left wing in the odd-man rush. After Gabriel Landeskog crossed the blue line with the puck, Olver darted in front of the net to setup camp on the bottom of the right faceoff circle. O’Reilly, who took a saucer pass from Landeskog, found Olver who buried the puck to give the Avs a two-goal advantage.
Gabriel Landeskog scored the next Colorado goal on a power play to push the lead to 3-0, which was more than the Avalanche needed to secure their 3-1 victory.
The only player that outshined Olver last night was O’Reilly. O’Reilly had an assist on all three Avalanche goals and earned the first star.
The Avalanche wrap-up their road trip in Winnipeg tomorrow against the Jets. Riding the momentum created by Olver last night, the Avs look to come back to Denver with 4 points and two wins out of this Canadian trip. With Galiardi on IR, the Avalanche may have made the right call in bringing Olver up from the minors. Colorado hopes that Olver will continue to make his presence known on the scoreboard, as hopefully this is what the Avalanche needed to get back on track.
