End of the year award predictions (dark horses)

Most people will answer this with the best candidate who they think will win but every year there are players who are quietly very good and are nominated for the end-of-year awards. These people are the dark horses and my dark horse picks are:

Hart trophy- Ryan Getzlaf.

He centers the best line in hockey and should be really primed for an outstanding year. He has Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan on his wings, has the size to play the full sheet of the ice and the determination to go hard to the net and get the dirty goals.

Evgeni Malkin is early season favorite but Getzlaf is my dark horse.

Vezina trophy- Cam Ward

Ward plays really solid hockey and hardly gets any recognition. Ward is one of the biggest goalies playing in the net. His positioning makes him look even bigger than he is. Along with that positioning he is very aerobic and makes some superhuman saves.

The favorite has to be someone like Pekka Rinne but Cam Ward is my pick

Norris trophy- Brent Burns

The Sharks quietly made the best move of the offseason in acquiring Burns. What can you say about Burns? He’s big, he’s mean, he has great offensive upside and plays a hard defensive game. Lost on a team like Minnesota, Burns is now on a high-powered Sharks team that is a cup contender. Burns will get playing time on a powerplay with Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Ryan Clowe, Logan Couture, Joe

Pavelski and Dan Boyle. How can a player not put up points there? Burns will light the world on fire and become the Norris trophy winner.

Calder trophy- Nino Niederreiter

Two names that appear on the favorites for this list are Gabriel Landeskog and David Rundblad but my pick is the guy who will be playing with John Tavares. Tavares, entering his third season, is primed for a breakout season and now he has a player like El Nino to play with. Niederreiter is a bigger player who will clear more room for Tavares and is almost a lock to play first line minutes. El Nino is currently hurt but when he comes back, he will shock the hockey world.

Selke-Ryan O’Reilly

There are few players who can play defense like Ryan O’Reilly does and none of them are only 20. O’Reilly has an extra sense that seems to know where the puck is and where the play is going and trying his best to intercept it. O’Reilly will come from out of nowhere and surprise the world with his defensive play. He will add some points on the scoreboard but it will be the ones he keeps off of it that make the most impact.

Lady Byng- Andrew Ladd

This is a harder trophy to predict. However, there are certain types of players that usually factor into the voting. This year, Ladd will come to the forefront and show what a sportsman he is. Winnipeg is a new franchise in an old division. The problems that this team will face will be unparalleled and it will be up to Ladd to be the face at the head of it.

Ladd has been through the highs and been through the lows and everything between. He knows how to be a professional and the exertions the team will be under will make him the winner of this award.

Jack Adams-Guy Boucher

Taking the Lightning to the playoffs once? That’s a fluke. Taking them twice? That’s a Jack Adams trophy. Boucher is a second year coach coaching like Barry Trotz. He has a system, it is a totally new system and what’s more? IT WORKS. Boucher is a fantastic coach getting the most bang for his buck and he will be rewarded.

Bonus: Masterson trophy- Peter Mueller

The guy has missed more than a year with a concussion. He is back and playing. Any other candidates for the Comeback Player of the Year, thank you for coming, please remember to get your coats at the door but we already have a winner.

Predictions

Hart trophy

Alex Ovechkin

Alex in my opinion is going to have a breakout year he is going to go back to his 50 goal season.  For the record if Crosby was healthy  I would of picked him easily.

Norris Trophy

Keith Yandle

Keith to me is on the verge of becoming a super star one of the best puck moving defencemen out there.

Vezina Trophy

Ryan Miller

The Sabres are going to be force in the east and it has a lot to  do with Ryan in net.

Calder   Trophy

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

I have close contact with the Oilers he tells me Ryan is the next best thing since sliced bread.

Lady Byng Trophy

Martin St.Louis

He is one of the most clean players in the league this year will be no exception

Selke Trophy

Pavel Datsyuk

Best defensive forward in the game.

Jack Adams Trophy

Bruce Boudreau

My pick to win the east Bruce will have to be the best coach to make that happen.

Matt Jordan

Lady Bing: Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay

Norris: Nick Lidstrom, Detroit

Selke: Frans Nielson, NY Islanders

Calder: Gabriel Landeskog, Colorado

Veznia: Henrik Lundqvist, NY Rangers

Jack Adams: Barry Trotz, Nashville

Hart: Brad Richards, NY Rangers

Surprise team of the Year: St. Louis

Disappointment of the year: Washington

Eugene Unick

Calder – While Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Gabriel Landeskog and Adam Larsson all will bill top minutes respective of their draft order, the surprise of the preseason Brandon Saad will reap the benefits of the top line pairing in Chicago, and the surprise staying power will surprise once again, by swiping the Calder from RNH.

Lady Byng – After being dethroned two years ago, Pavel Datsyuk will regain his stranglehold on the Lady Byng, winning the first of two awards.

Norris – While “The Perfect Human” won the award yet again last year, expect the Central division to be host to the Norris again this year, with Shea Weber having a career year, and earning the bitter arbitration award and walking out of Nashville after a career year.

Vezina – In what will be the tune up year to next year’s Olympics, expect US Olympic hero Ryan Miller to return focused, and with the best lineup in front of him since the Drury-Briere years, he will keep the award away from Martin Brodeur in the Devil’s swan song season, and finally stop being a runner up this season.

Selke – With another American Olympic hero gaining this award with Ryan Kesler winning it last year, there is another Olympic participant who will instead skate away with it this season.  Pavel Datsyuk will win the second of two awards.  Look for Hawks captain Jonathon Toews to finish a close second, as he begins to get more recognition for his two way play.

hart – After bitter playoff finishes the past two years, the man with arguably the most pressure on him to elevate his team to the promised land, Alexander Ovechkin will have a bounce back year, and the Caps will run away with the East, obliterating anyone in their path.  The Captain will lead the charge, surpassing 50 goals and 110 points, while taking the next step so many have been waiting to see in his ability to lead a team.

jack adams – While for all the criticism he has taken over the years, Bruce Boudreau should be the winner after another President’s Trophy season, the award will go to someone toiling in obscurity, as Panthers head boss, Kevin Dineen, will take the revamped roster up the standings, and sneak in an as an eighth seed, earning the award in South Florida.

Michael Stuart

Hart: Carey Price — A bit of a risk on here but I honestly believe that Carey was the mosts valuable player to his team last season.  He’s a great goalie on a team that needs him.

Vezina: Roberto Luongo — I think that he will be ready for a great season this year.  He came into camp in great shape and seemed ready for a great year.  If he can play like he did during the regular season last year, I don’t believe he will have much competition for the Vezina.

Norris: Shea Weber — He’s on a one year contract and he is going to cash in big next year.  In my opinion he is the best Dman in the game as he is just so well rounded.  He can put up goals, assists, blocks, hits and everything else.

Calder: Gabriel Landeskog — One of the most NHL ready players to come out of last year’s draft, Landeskog is going to show us what he is made of.  He has all the skills necessary to dominate in his first year in the bigs.

Selke: Ryan Kesler — He’s going to come back from injury and just run away with this trophy.  Pavel Datsyuk will give him a run for it, but in the end this is Kesler’s trophy.

Lady Byng: Pavel Datsyuk — Do I really need to say much more?  This guy owns the Lady Byng.

Jack Adams: Barry Trotz — In my opinion Barry is the best coach in the NHL right now.  He has deserved this trophy before and come out empty handed.  This is his year.

Well there you have it.  For my next Blog i will Post My predictions for the Awards. I just have to put a little thought into it.

Hope you enjoyed
