What we said before the draft: Over the top 10 prospects headed for the NHL Draft Gabriel Landeskog probably compares the most to Jonathan Huberdeau so obviously I feel he fits the Avalanche just as well as Huberdeau does. Landeskogs advantage over many of the other prospects in the draft is he is already large in stature and is definitely one of the most, if the the most, NHL ready prospect. He has great two way skill and I like to look at him as an enhanced Ryan O’Reilly. He is strictly a LW which obviously fulfills a much needed position for the Avalanche and he is a guy who can fill that spot come October 2011.
Interesting Fact: Landeskog was 8 when the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 2001 and said he had the championship poster on his wall as a boy. He also stated his boyhood idol was Avalanche great Peter Forsberg.
Whats Next? Most reports on Landeskog had him as the most NHL ready youngster in the 2011 draft so it is to be expected that he makes a strong push to be on the opening day roster. Look for Landeskog to be on a line with 2009 3rd overall selection, Matt Duchene, and who knows maybe 2010 19th overall selection, Joey Hishon, will join them. Landeskog wears #92 for Kitchener which is currently available, but his #12 that he wears with Sweden is currently worn by Kevin Porter.
