Is there some relief in sight? Could the Avalanche be signing a “top flight” netminder?
Well, according to the rumor mill, Tomas Vokoun may want to sign with the Avs during the offseason. Evidently, he believes that the Avalanche could be a Stanley Cup contender as early as next year.
Given that the boys in burgundy are in desperate need of a number one backstopper, and given that Vokoun is actually available and it wouldn’t cost a draft pick or a player to get him, I ask you this – Why not? I bet the Avs could lure him here for pennies on the dollar and it would be an instant upgrade at a position that has been lacking since Saint Patrick retired.
Mr. Vokoun is beginning to age a bit (he’ll be 35 in July), but a 37 year-old netminder just won the Stanley Cup! I’m not saying that Vokoun is anything like Tim Thomas (their similarities end with having the same first and last name), but I do believe that having a veteran goalie between the pipes would boost the confidence of the team – mainly the defensive corps.
His career numbers are actually pretty impressive. He has a lifetime record of 262 wins, 267 losses, 35 ties and 41 over time losses. Yeah, that means he’s an “under 500″ goalie, but look at the crappy teams he’s played for!!! So, let’s look at the more telling numbers. His lifetime goals against average – 2.56. His lifetime save percentage – .917. In fact, this guy has NEVER had a year where his save percentage dropped below .903!
So, what do you all think? With Ilya Bryzgalov looking to ink a deal with Philidelphia, is Vokoun the next best masked man available? Put on the GM hat and tell us what direction you would go…
