Why he fits on the Avalanche: The Avalanche have worked toward building their defense since 2007 as they drafted prospects such as Kevin Shattenkirk, Colby Cohen, Cameron Gaunce, Stefan Elliott, and Tyson Barrie. Then this past season where they did not draft a defenseman high in the draft in 2010 the Avalanche traded for former #1 pick Erik Johnson. Larsson, although not quite as tall, can be compared highly with Erik Johnson. Both players are right handed shots with high defensive skill while still possessing an offensive prowess. Larsson also has no weaknesses that can not be fixed with some coaching and continued growth. Larsson would join a defensive corp of the Avalanche with a lot of depth but not as much defensive specialist.
Why he doesn’t fit on the Avalanche: As much as the Avalanche can use a shutdown “franchise” defender as Adam Larsson is seen he is another right handed shot which may cause some depth “issues”. Obviously having too many great prospects should not be a bad thing but the Avalanche currently have Erik Johnson, Ryan O’Byrne (RFA), Ryan Wilson (RFA), Stefan Elliott, and Tyson Barrie who all are right handed shots. Wilson, if resigned, will likely be a depth player, and since Larsson may not be ready for another season or two it can not be assumed all 5 of the aforementioned defensemen will still be in the organization.
