Ryan Wilson, quietly, had a very successful year in a year were the Avalanche saw little success. Of Avalanche defensemen who played at least half the season Wilson was 3rd in points and blocks and 2nd in +/- and hits. While these numbers may mark more of the Avalanche’s lack of success than Wilson’s abilities he still set career highs in games played, hits, blocks, PIMs, SOG, and power play points. On a team with few physical specimen Wilson stood strong above the rest and performed well in his role.
Stay or Leave? Stay. 2 yrs 1.8 million
Wilson is yet another RFA the Avalanche own the rights to and unlike my opinion on Hunwick and Cumiskey I believe the Avalanche must keep Wilson one the team. With Liles and Quincey being the lefties who will definitely be on the opening night roster the Avalanche need a physical defensive defenseman to fill that 3rd left handed defenseman spot. On the right side they Avalanche will have Erik Johnson, Ryan O’Byrne, and like Stefan Elliot, Tyson Barrie, or an offseason addition. either way the Avalanche need to match pairings and they do not want to get stuck having 3 offensive minded left shooting d-men.
