So I believe it is safe to say out of all the low points of the Avalanche season many people view the trade of Colby Cohen for Matt Hunwick the lowest point of all. All the issues Bruin’s fans had with Hunwick transferred over to Colorado as he continued to play poorly game after game. The best way to define what fans thought of Hunwick was a #BlameHunwick hashtag that was started on Twitter. Although he showed areas of improvement late in the season his overall play wound up way under par.
Stay or Leave? Leave. Unlikely but should be done.
The Avalanche have 4 defensemen who will be definites on the opening day starting lineup, disregarding potential injury,: John Michael Liles, Kyle Quincey, Erik Johnson, and Ryan O’Byrne (RFA). Of those four defenseman two are righty and two lefty with the two lefties being more offensive minded d-men. Hunwick is another lefty who is seen as a puck moving offensive d-man and I just don’t see where the Avalanche can squeeze him in. I would especially be upset with giving Hunwick, who is a RFA, a new deal because of what will be available on the market, such as Christian Ehrhoff. The Avalanche have 4 free agent defensemen and three are left handed shots the best move would be to attempt to move two of the three, all of which are RFA, around the NHL Draft.
