The Avalanche acquired Tomas Fleischmann on November 30th, 2010 in a trade with the Washington Capitals for veteran defenseman Scott Hannan. Prior to joining the Avalanche Fleischmann had the reputation much like that of former Avalanche wing, Wojtek Wolski, he had loads of skill but lacked the consistency to make a difference. In his 23 games with the Capitals Fleischmann accumulated only 10 points leading to his relocation. Fleischmann immediately formed a chemistry with Matt Duchene when he joined the Avalanche and he even recorded his first career hat trick in an Avs come from behind victory against the Chicago Blackhawks. Unfortunately Fleischmann was only able to notch 22 games as an Avalanche player due to being diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism on January 20th, 2011, which shut him down for the remainder of the season.
Stay or Leave? Stay @ 1 yr 2 million.
The Fleischmann situation reminds me a lot of Peter Mueller’s situation last year. Granted the Avalanche know more of where Fleischmann is at since Mueller was seemingly a mystery, but both players have a lot of talent which they should be able to display if they can actually get on the ice. I feel the Avalanche will be skeptical to sign Fleischmann to more than a one year deal since they can not be sure if he will be able to complete a season but after seeing him do work with Duchene during his short stint they know if he can get on the ice he will pay dividends. This is why I elect to stay with Fleischmann and give him this season to prove his worth.
