Is there a goalie in there somewhere???

Playoff Update - In Case You Cared...

It is so damn difficult watching the second season roll on while our own team sits idle.  I truly miss the days of perennial playoff competition that used to engulf the entire Rocky Mountain region.  Our boys in burgundy need to get their ducks in a row and get back to days gone by.  They do say that history has a tendency to repeat itself – we can only hope…

But, I digress.  Lets chat a bit about the playoffs as they are unfolding in front of us.

And Marty scores another...

First off, anyone who picked – or said they picked – Tampa Bay to go to the Eastern Conference Finals is lying to you.  They have had the toughest hill to climb out of any team thus far, beating Pittsburgh in a full 7 game series and then handling Washington hastily in 4.  I will agree that the team has been playing “lights-out” hockey, but my question to you is this:  Will the aging Dwayne Roloson be able to keep up the pace?  The guy will be 42 years old this October and facing Boston in the next series will prove to be a HUGE test.

Cat-like reflexes... at 37 years old...

On the flip side, Tim Thomas is no spring chicken.  He recently turned the ripe old age of 37 (damn I feel old – I’ve got him by 2 months), yet continues to show signs of brilliance.  Boston had a bit of an easier hill to climb to the Conference finals by ousting Montreal in a hard fought 7 games and then earning retribution versus the Flyers in 4.  Can the Bruins continue to play as well as they did against Philly?  Will Tampa pull off another upset?  This series will be intriguing to say the least – the battle of the Geezer Goaltenders…

Looks like Suter missed his assignment!

The Western Conference games have proved to be a bit more entertaining.  What is the deal with Vancouver? They grab a 3 game lead in each series, yet can’t close em out!  No killer instinct…  The Sedin boys haven’t been the Sedin boys and Roberto Luongo has been very shaky.  Nashville, on the other hand, seems to be playing pretty good.  They hunted the Ducks in the first round and beat them in 6, but began the second round a bit flat.  Joel Ward has turned thing around for them and if Shea Weber and Ryan Suter can shut down Kesler and the Sedins, Nashville may just make it to the Western Conference finals for the first time in franchise history!!! Right…  Um, not likely…

Lastly, the series between San Jose and Detroit is getting very interesting.  Much like Vancouver, the Sharks came out of the gate, guns firing on all cylinders, and looked as if the squid-heads would be shark bait in no time.  However, you can never count out the Wings.  They made quick work of the Coyotes, began the series with the Sharks a bit flat, but have gotten their legs under them the past couple games.  Can Detroit win 4 straight to take it or will San Jose finally close it out tomorrow tonight?  Being an Avalanche aficionado, I’m pulling for San Jose…  ENJOY!!!
