Bet you wish you would have gone to work instead of taking that sick day huh?
In what was one of the more lackluster Deadline days in recent memory, with only 15 deals going down, the Avalanche stood pat with their current big club roster, and made a minor league tweak.
The Avs sent defenseman Kevin Montgomery to Edmonton, where he will report to AHL club Oklahoma City. In return, the Avalanche acquired D man Shawn Belle, a bit of a journeyman, this being his fourth club after doing tours of duty within the Montreal, Minnesota and of course, Edmonton organizations. In his 16 NHL games played, he’s popped…1 point. Impressive. I don’t see Belle high on the Avs depth chart, but with injuries the way they seem to be with the club, it wouldn’t shock me to see him in a couple games before the season ends.
In other Trade Deadline news, the biggest news probably came out of Edmonton. Dustin Penner returns to SoCal, this time, across the street to the LA Kings. The Oilers picked up highly regarded D man Colten Teubert, a first-round pick and a conditional third-round pick in 2012.
We can all breathe easy again Avs fans. Stastny and Liles (who sweated out another Deadline Day as his name was bandied about) will remain in Burgundy and Blue for at least the remainder of this season. What happens in the summer, I think is entirely dependent on how the team finishes off these final 6 weeks of the regular season. Tanking is not an option, especially with the draft class of 2011 being one of the weaker ones. But all that is for another time, another post.
