With a 1/3 of the season left its crunch time. Everyone knows that every point counts and every game is the most important game of the season. Unfortunately from the Avs play of late someone besides Sacco needs to tell the team that. The play of late makes me question does the team understand and is Sacco being heard?
Sacco in my opinion is a major problem with the Avs play. I understand the injuries make things difficult. And for a young team overcoming these types of seasons requires patience and consistency. Sacco’s constant shifting of the lines has hurt the team and not allowed the lines to build chemistry. Just because your top two lines have a night or two off lighting the lamp doesn’t mean a change is needed. But Sacco loves to juggle and its hurt the squad.
The days of the high flying lamp lighting Avs of early this season seems to have run its course. For the first half of the season all the bounces seem to go in. Now the Avs can’t hit a wide open goal to save their life. The Avs still exhibit their trademark speed game, but the we won’t lose attitude seems to be out on the IR with a concussion.
We all know that goaltending is the weak link in the Avs chain. It seems to me the team knows that three goals are going to find their way to the back of the net every game. That eventually takes a toll on the best of teams. For the youngest team in the league this could be devastating.
Strength of Schedule
Versus recently did a piece on the Western Conference and the all out war for playoff positions. The graphic showed the strength of schedule for all the teams remaining games. And its the Avs that have the easiest remaining schedule of all the teams in the conference. Could this play to our favor? Possibly! More than likely not. I say that having watched us lose to the Oilers, Islanders, and Ducks to name a few. For some reason when Detroit is in the house or any other top team we play as though we could win the cup. But when the garbage teams come in the Avs play as though its a game of pick up. I hope that the last part of the season will yeild a change in this trend. I’m very optimistic about the playoffs and the Avs chances. But lets not talk about it and just see when it happens.
ON A MILE HIGH NOTE
Shout out goes to Milan Hejduk! He has been the brightest spot in the past few weeks and continues to work hard to ensure a spot in the post season. Go AVS!
