Six Down, Six To Go

How bout them Avs!!!  After a bit of a skid out east, the Avalanche have ripped off six nice wins in a row.  They earned a bit of sweet revenge against the Thrashers, played a complete game against the Caps, swept a home-and-home series with the Hawks, put up 6 goals in a victory over the Senators and took out one of the leagues toughest defensive teams, the Habs.  These games were hard fought offensive battles with some of the leagues best, and the boys in burgundy were up to the task.

Matt Duchene, Paul Stastny and Tomas Fleischmann have all been shining bright spots for the Avalanche during this streak.  Duchene is the teams leading scorer with 13 goals and 21 assists.  Stastny is averaging exactly 1.0 point-per-game and winning 51.8% of faceoffs.  Fleischmann recorded his first career hat trick against the Blackhawks last week and seems to be fitting in very well with the team.  Now, just imagine what it will be like when Milan Hejduk is 100% and Chris Stewart comes back from the IR!!!

The offensive production that this team is posting is just short of amazing.  But, like I’ve said all year, the defense has got to start showing up.  I’ll admit that when the d-men are jumping up into the play and registering points it makes for a very exciting game (can you say heat attack???), but they have got to start playing better in their own end (especially if Craig Anderson decides to keep wandering away from the net like he did last night against the Habs!!!  Did you see that crap???).

That being said, the next six games for the Avalanche are HUGE.  All six will be against division and conference rivals, which means every game has a 4-point-swing potential.  They’re in the “meat” of the schedule now and although it’s still fairly early in the season, these games will have a lot to do with playoff positioning.  They will host the Kings, the Wild, and the dreaded Dead Wings before going on the road to face the Oil-Spill and the Flame-Outs.  In the sixth game, the Avs will return home for one against the Canuckleheads.  It would be AWESOME to come away with 8 to 10 of the possible 12 points here…
