Matt Duchene Joins Twitter..Is It For The Right Reason?

For those of you who don’t already know (or haven’t read this morning’s Denver Post) Matt Duchene is now a part of everybody’s favorite place for breaking news, Twitter. @Matt9Duchene is his handle. I personally love it when famous people join up, especially hockey players. Coyotes enforcer Paul Bissonnette is a Twitter Superstar, the same goes for guys like Dustin Brown and Joffery Lupul. They do it to bring fans closer to the game they love, to get past the “We gave it 110% tonight’s” and “We have to move our feet more’s”. Through this, we’ve learned about Bissonnette’s hated of PT Cruisers and Brown’s love of the Peanut Butter Stomp. But I’m getting off the point here, why did our boy Dutchy join twitter? Adrian Dater did our work for us and scooped out why

“You look at our team, and we’ve got so much talent and guys that are worth watching, and it’s discouraging to go out on a Wednesday night and see 12,000-13,000 fans,” Duchene said after Wednesday’s practice at Duluth Ice Forum. “I thought to myself, ‘What can I do, other than continuing to try and help the team on the ice, to help it off the ice. This was something that came right away into my head, to try to reach out.”

Yes, Duchene is now adding ‘Avalanche Marketing Guru’ to his business cards. Like I said above, I’m thrilled one of my favorite current Avs is on here interacting with fans (even if he’s got a taste for country music) but should it be his ‘job’ to fill the Pepsi Center? We all know how an amped crowd can get a team going, and as Duchene tells us, the opposite drives some to action. It obviously has pissed him off enough to do so. Will it deviate focus from his game as he scans the crowd from the bench and sees rows of empty seats rather than filled to the rafters with screaming fans, wondering how he can motivate the fans to come out via twitter as opposed to a hat trick? I sure as hell hope not.
It slightly grinds my gears that he seems to have taken Dater’s ‘attendance’ axe and started grinding it. Duchene has one job and one job only, to make the Avs the best damn team he can make them, and to one day win the Stanley Cup. Not being from Denver, I have no idea what the economy looks like, or what the Avs are charging for tickets (though I hear it’s in the top 10 highest in the league) but I’d much rather hear about Duchene’s choice of country artists than have him do what sounds almost like pleading with Avs fans, to come out to the rink on a Wednesday night. Here’s my advice..

Win, make a habit out of winning, and they will come. Leave the Marketing Team* to do their job, you do yours.

Keep the tweets about the shaving cream you put in Liles’ gloves and your smoke show of a girl. Thanks
