All-Star Fantasy

Let’s chat about the NHL’s new version of the All-Star Game.

We, as fans, have grown accustomed to the traditional “East vs. West” type of match-up.  Heck, we’ve even put up with the “North America vs. Everybody Else” match-up, but now we have to deal with the “My Friends vs. Your Friends” match-up?  What the hell were Brendan Shanahan and the other NHL execs thinking?

This is how the new All-Star game is going to work…

Fans will cast their votes for the starting positions – as always – and beyond that, the NHL will pick the remainder of the players that will participate.  So far, nothing new.

This is where things begin to get interesting…

The players involved will vote for 2 captains and 4 assistant captains.  These ‘captains’ will then have a ‘Fantasy Draft’ and pick who they want on their respective teams.  Just like any other school-yard game, my buddies will be on my team, your buddies will be on your team, and someone will be picked last…  Why not throw everyone’s sticks into a pile in the center of the ice and have someone throw them to each side, like and old drop-in game?  This is a joke.

Let’s say two Avalanche players like Paul Stastny and Chris Stewart make it to the All-Star game.  Chances are they could be playing against each other!  Who do you root for?  This format has taken any allegiance out of the sport and turned the All-Star game into a pond hockey, Mystery, Alaska type of debacle.  Is that how you want to see the All-Stars playing???

Whats worse is that the three players picked from the Avs didn’t include Stewart. Craig Anderson has been put on the ballot, why? He hasn’t played but a couple of games and doesn’t have a winning record. Meanwhile Stewart leads the team in goals and points, does that make sense?
