After a mediocre pre-season, the Colorado Avalanche will look to start the regular season off right against a tough opponent. The defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawksd to be exact. In less than two hours, the Avs will host the regular season debut for both teams.
The Avs will also be hosting some Stanley Cup Champions of their own.
Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Patrick Roy, and the rest of the ’95-96 team will be on hand to watch the game. The only players who couldn’t make it were Chris Simon and Sandis Ozolinsh, who are both still playing professional hockey in Russia. This will likely be a once-in-a-lifetime reunion, and it will be a perfect atmosphere of looking reverently to the past while moving forward with our exciting young players.
The spotlight tonight will be on two players. The first is obvious. Craig Anderson made 38 saves in last year’s opener against San Jose and he never looked back. He was the team’s MVP, and with the lack of improvement on defense this year means he’ll be looking at a lot more rubber again this season.
The other guy I’ll be watching tonight is Davey Jones. With Peter Mueller out indefinitely (another concussion – BAD sign), Jones will have to shoulder the load as the 2nd line left wing and try to recreate the chemistry Matt Duchene and Mueller shared late last season. We’ve seen glimpses of Jones’ potential, but injuries have kept him from reacher the upper-echelon. Now that he’s healthy, he’ll need to prove he belongs on a scoring line. I think he’s got it in him.
Good luck tonight boys, and make our Champions proud!
P.S. ’95-96 Colorado Avalanche would stomp the ’09-10 Chicago Blackhawks. Just sayin’.
