After a lethargic 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, the Colorado Avalanche are surely looking forward to this two week NHL break for the Olympics.
This team has all the ingredients that are typical of one that is likely to burn out as the season moves along. Our team is made up of an unusual amount of rookies, who, in most cases, aren’t really prepared for the grueling 82-game season that is the NHL. In the case of college players like Brandon Yip, they’ll generally only about half that amount.
Add to that the fact that Craig Anderson has already almost doubled his previous most-games-played-in-a-single-season total, and it’s no surprise that the team has started to perform a little less than optimal the last few games.
With the exception of Paul Statsny (USA) and Peter Budaj (SVK), the Avs will be using this time to recharge their batteries and prepare for the stretch run to the playoffs.
I’m willing to bet the Avs will benefit from this break more so than a lot of teams, and they’ll come out firing on all cylinders. This is especially good news considering the fact that the Avs go into the break still tied for 1st in its division, caught in a tight battle with the Vancouver Canucks.
