Avs Face Detroit Tonight

AUTHOR: Jake Bennett | IN: Avalanche | COMMENTS: 1 Comment |

Once again, the Colorado Avalanche are up against their historic rivals, the Detroit Red Wings. Though they’ve faced each other many times in their storied history together, this might be the first time in their recent past where the Avs might actually be better on paper than their nemesis.

The Avs enter tonight’s game as the 3rd seed in the Western Conference, while the Red Wings are uncharacteristically looking at the playoff picture from the outside in. They can blame injuries, ’cause they’ve been pounded. But as Avs fans heard so often the last few years, that’s no excuse for a good team. There’s still a lot of hockey left to play, so we’ll see if the Wings can drag themselves back into the playoffs and maybe give the Avs a chance to redeem themselves against Detroit in a playoff series.

Olympic Notes:

In this past decade, Milan Hejduk, pictured here with the Rocket Richard Trophy he won in 2003, has scored the fourth most goals in the NHL.

Still waiting on the US roster, but we did get some interesting news from the Czech Republic. Surprisingly, our very own Milan Hejduk has not made the the line-up. Before we skewer the Czech team’s GM for omitting the man with the fourth most goals scored (295) in the 2000’s, there have been reports (Denver Post) the reason he will not be in Vancouver for the Games is because of his lingering knee injury, and it was in fact Hejduk who declined a roster spot in order to heal up for the Avs’ stretch run.
