"Ovechkin SMASH!"
If this game was any indication of where we stand as legitimate playoff contenders, we’ve got a loooong way to go. In one of the most dominant performances I’ve seen this season, the Washington Capitals rolled past the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday night as if Alex Ovechkin had just invented the wheel. Though we were able to keep Ovie’s shots out of the net, that’s about all we could do in a brutal 6-1 beatdown.
Really not much to say about this game. The Capitals are #1 in the NHL right now for a reason. It’s certainly the most aggressive team I’ve seen this year, and that means their confidence is soaring.
Did it bug anyone else that every feature and off topic discussion surrounded Ovechkin though? The last straw was Kyle Keefe talking about how he asked the Capitals players if any of our guys reminded them of Alex the Great. What kind of question is that? He’s arguably the best player in the world! Why would he put their guys in the awkward position of telling a guy who covers the Avalanche “Ha! Are you kidding me? There’s nobody even close to the caliber of Alexander Ovechkin on your team. Maybe if he was blind-folded with his hands tied behind his back and a hockey stick stickin’ out of his ass, then he’d look like Wojtek Wolski.”
The injury to Mike Green will certainly lead to a suspension for David Koci. It was a dirty hit from behind, there’s no question about that. As I said in my last post though, he plays like 2 seconds for us each night. I think we’ll survive without him…
The worst part about the game though, on top of the humiliation, was being beaten by Jose F#@%in’ Theodore. I don’t hate the guy because he left for greener pastures. I understand the NHL is a business. He felt he was worth more than the Avs were offering him, and the Washington Capitals agreed (until of course the first game of the playoffs last season). I didn’t like the guy because for 2+ seasons he was supposed to be The Man for us between the pipes and I NEVER felt confident that he could give us a chance to win. And if I felt that way on my couch or in the stands, I can only imagine how the players felt, and it showed in their oftentimes conservative play.
But anyways, that’s all in the past, and starting now, so is this game. Time to move on and look forward to a long rest period and our next game on Saturday, when we’ll be playing the Columbus Blue Jackets.
