With 4:39 left in the 3rd period, things were looking bleak for the Colorado Avalanche. The Philadelphia Flyers had just scored on the power play, and while the Avs were still holding on to a 5-4 lead, the situation was looking all too similar. In both of the Avs last two losses, they have been leading by at least 2 goals before faltering in the 3rd period. At the end of the 2nd period in this game, the Avs were ahead 5-2.
Craig Anderson decided he’d had enough of the Avs’ charitable ways. He stonewalled the Flyers in the waning seconds of the game after the team pulled their back-up goalie for an extra man. He ended up with 30 saves in a solid effort.
The nice thing about this game is that seemingly everyone got in on the scoring (except Duchene). Our big stars came through for us (Paul Stastny 2 goals, 1 assist; Wojtek Wolski 1 assist), our promising young players (David Jones 2 goals; Ryan O’Reilly 2 assists; Chris Stewart 1 assist), our defenders (Scott Hannan 1 goal; JM Liles and Kyle Cumiskey each had 1 assist) and our grinder Cody McLeod got in on the action as well with a nice goal after some nifty puck control.
Ian Laperriere made his first trip back to Denver with his new team. Lappy was a fan favorite around here after playing four seasons with the Avs. He recorded no points and was called for unsportsmanlike conduct and roughing penalties in tonight’s contest.
