Twenty-nine teams and their fans are still waiting for the Colorado Avalanche to come back down to Earth. Judging by the Avs’ impressive performance against the Edmonton Oilers, they shouldn’t hold their breath. Wojtek Wolski scored two goals and Craig Anderson recorded his second shutout of the season as the Avalanche rolled over their division rivals 3-0 in a mostly lopsided match Tuesday night.
The Colorado Avalanche is currently the #1 team in the NHL.
There must be something in the Gatorade at the Mile High City. Colorado’s pro sports teams seem to have a vendetta against the so-called professional sports prognosticators, because all the Avalanche and the Denver Broncos have done so far is show how much credibility these “experts” really have. Both teams were picked to finish close to the bottom of their respective leagues. Both have come out of the gates blitzing. To put it in perspective, both the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Broncos are off to their best starts since the last time they were world champions (2001 for the Avs, 1998 for the Broncos).
There’s a lot to like about this team right now. They’re playing a smart, fast, exciting brand of hockey.
Just as the Broncos aren’t really expected to finish their season 19-0, the Avs aren’t likely to end the regular season with 137 points (what they’re on pace for at this point). Still, a lot of the “experts” are starting to take the foot out of their mouths and use it to backtrack on their early gloomy predictions. Now, the supposedly rebuilding Colorado teams seem to have the potential to be deep playoff threats – better than anyone could have imagined. What else can a Denver fan do but just sit back and enjoy the moment?
